Week 8 has come to a close. This week was a bit hectic (as all the weeks seem to be). This time it was travel. The baby and I traveled up north to visit family that was in town for the week that we have not seen in a couple of years. My mom is an excellent cook and so I of course ate way too much food, and then we also did what all good families do-we ate junk together too. Chips, pop, ice cream and the worst (BEST) of all pecan pie. YUM YUM YUM. I did still try and run on my dad's treadmill most days. I found that trying to run with two 5 year olds and a 1 year old is not so simple. The majority of my workouts ended up broken up into a couple of miles at a time. But this also made it kind of fun. I was able to end week 8 with a 5K this morning on Grosse Ille, an island community here in Michigan. It was a chilly, but beautiful morning. The temperature was near 30 but the wind had it feeling like 18 when we started. I had a plan. My plan was to average 9:45 for miles 1 and 2 and then as fast as I could for mile 3 (.1). Well unlike my past races I did not pace myself correctly. I ended up with a 9:22 for mile 1. Which for me is moving pretty fast. So by 1.5 I was really feeling the burn in my lungs, and the icy cold air was not helping matters. I was right on target for mile 2, 9:45. Then I started thinking a few negative thoughts, and even the idea of walking creeped in. Thankfully I remembered the words of encouragement my husband had said to me this morning and the words of advice from my dad the previous week. I kept running. I slowed my pace back a bit more, but I kept going. I had a 10:04 for mile 3. Which left me with not much left for my .1 I took a little over a min. to complete that. All that being said, I still PRed. I ended with 30:22 according to my Garmin, 30:19 chip time.
As I checked the result page my eyes teared up as I saw that I had placed 13th in my age group out of 52! I felt a huge sense of pride swell up inside of me. I am doing this! I am training for races, putting in the time and effort and it is paying off!
4 more weeks of training left. These are going to be 4 very difficult weeks, with lots of increases in mileage...but I am looking forward to seeing even more progress!
